코딩의 산업 전반에 필요성이 커지고, 개발자가 대우받는 시대가 왔고, 누구든지 코딩을 공부할 수 있는 시대가 왔습니다. 그리고 많은 사람이 개발자로 도전하고 있습니다. 이제 막 개발자로 커리어를 시작하고 싶은 사람에게 가장 큰 장벽과도 느껴지는 게 코딩 테스트입니다. 자료구조와 알고리즘에 언젠가부터 코딩 테스트를 통과하기 위한 수험 과목처럼 느껴지는데 개발자로 취업이든 스스로 더 성장 하기 위해서든 중요한 건 사실입니다.
대상 독자
이 책은 코딩 테스트에는 적합한 책이 아닙니다. 하지만 다른 문제 위주의 코딩테스트용 책들과 구분되게 기본적인 개념에 대한 이해에 더 많은 노력을 하는게 느껴집니다. 코딩테스트를 공부하기 전 단계인, 이제 막 문법을 공부하고 더 나은 개발자로 성장하기 위한 이들 위한 책입니다. 마치 나무가 잘 자라기 위한 건강한 토양의 양분과도 같은 역할을 하는 책입니다.
좋았던 점
책이 부담스럽게 두꺼운 것도 아니기 때문에 가볍게 시작할 수 있습니다. 개념 이해를 위한 그림과 설명이 굉장히 세세합니다. 자료구조나 알고리즘이 어려운 건 시각적으로 확인하면서 공부하는 게 쉽지 않아서인데 그 부분에 노력하신 게 느껴집니다.
아쉬운 점
자료구조와 알고리즘을 사용하여 실제 코딩 테스트용 문제를 다양하게 접할 수는 없었습니다. 역시나 이 한 권으로 모든 코딩테스트를 준비할 수는 없습니다. 반드시 다른 추가적인 공부가 필요합니다. 그래도 다음 책을 위한 준비 과정으로 생각하시면 부족함이 없을 듯합니다.

개발자로 이제 막 파이썬 기본 문법을 공부하신 분들에게 넘어야 하는 산은 코딩 테스트입니다. 산을 오르기 전부터 이미 코딩 테스트를 맛보기라도 경험했다면 두렵고 막막할 것입니다. 이 책은 그런 사람들을 위한 산을 넘기 위한 이정표와 같은 역할을 해줍니다. 실제로 코딩 테스트라는 산이 얼마나 험하고 힘든지는 가봐야 알 수 있지만, 이 책을 이정표 삼아 산을 오르기 전 만반의 준비를 한다면 결국 산의 정상에 오를 수 있으리 생각합니다.

For someone just starting a developer career, the biggest wall is usually the coding test. At some point, data structures and algorithms started to feel like exam subjects you cram just to pass coding tests, but whether you want a developer job or simply want to keep growing, there’s no denying they matter.
Who This Book Is For
This book is not a coding test book. But unlike the many problem-driven coding test books out there, you can tell it puts much more effort into building an understanding of the fundamentals. It’s for people who have just finished learning syntax, one step before studying for coding tests, and who want to grow into better developers. Think of it as the rich, healthy soil a tree needs in order to grow well.
What I Liked
The book isn’t intimidatingly thick, so it’s easy to pick up. The illustrations and explanations are remarkably detailed when it comes to building intuition for concepts. Data structures and algorithms are hard largely because it’s tough to study them while seeing what’s going on, and you can feel how much effort went into solving exactly that.
What I Missed
You won’t get to work through a wide variety of real coding test problems using the data structures and algorithms it covers. As you’d expect, this one book can’t prepare you for every coding test, and you’ll definitely need to study more on top of it. Still, if you treat it as preparation for the next book, it does the job just fine.
Final Thoughts
For those who have just learned basic Python syntax on the way to becoming developers, the mountain you have to climb is the coding test. If you’ve had even a small taste of coding tests before starting the climb, it probably feels daunting and overwhelming. This book serves as a signpost for getting over that mountain. You won’t know how steep and grueling the coding test mountain really is until you’re on it, but if you use this book as your signpost and prepare thoroughly before the climb, I believe you’ll make it to the summit in the end.
