A Lucky Chance
If you’re active on dev Instagram, you occasionally get the chance to join “book review events.” They’re a great way to read books for free, so I entered a review event run by the publisher Younglim Cardinal.
Honestly, Younglim Cardinal wasn’t a name I knew. About 99% of what I read is development books, so it was pure chance that I entered the ‘I Thought Everything Would Work Out Once I Got Here’ review event. And luckily, I was selected!

What’s Inside
Silicon Valley: a place almost every developer dreams about at least once. The stories shared by a senior developer who works there are full of the real Silicon Valley and of everyday human life.
The book grew out of posts the author originally wrote on their blog. It might be worth reading those blog posts first.
Here are a few things I enjoyed while reading.
The Author’s Experience
The book is packed with the author’s ten years of experience. Work, daily life, culture, and even recent changes — the wide range of information and handy tips made it a fun read.
From the atmosphere back in 2015, when the author first started going to interviews, to today’s shift toward valuing diversity — I loved getting a glimpse of experiences that are hard to know about unless you’ve spent those years alongside Silicon Valley.

… among women engineers, some change their names to gender-neutral ones so their gender can’t be guessed, like going from Alexandra to Alex or from Samantha to Sam …
Objective Data
Another thing I liked is that the stories are grounded in objective data, so instead of pure speculation, you get a reality that hits home, like a newspaper article written by a sociologist.
Job roles, levels, salaries, stock, severance, cost of living, and more… Each piece of information comes with objective data and its source, so the book is full of practical, genuinely useful information.

The Many Sides of Silicon Valley
I had vaguely assumed that Silicon Valley developers were all well off, always confident, and strangers to failure. But behind Silicon Valley’s glittering surface, I caught a glimpse of cold reality, countless setbacks, and plenty of worries.
p265
Stress and anxiety are practically a job requirement for people working in Silicon Valley. Many people here live with fear, anxiety, stress, and loneliness.
After Reading
Before reading, I simply assumed Silicon Valley was a place where everything was perfect. As the title “I Thought Everything Would Work Out Once I Got Here” suggests, it felt like everything would fall into place once you got there. But I came to realize that Silicon Valley has its lights and shadows too, and it’s home to people with the same worries as the rest of us.
I read it on the subway to and from work, and I enjoyed it so much I lost track of time. Who knows, maybe someday I’ll get to work in Silicon Valley too, so I’d better keep working hard. 🤣
Afterword

The author saw my review and reached out, so I think I’ll go get my copy signed. I keep noticing how the smallest things can lead to new connections between people who had absolutely nothing linking them before.
Connections are a funny thing. I want to keep meeting more people and help new connections grow into meaningful ones.
Thank you! 😊
