My PyCon Volunteer Experience
Looking back on PyCon 2024 as a "volunteer"

” ‘Zen Of Python’ ,

Here’s my honest take on volunteering at PyCon 2024.
A Day in the Life of Jabong
Jabong (Korean slang for a volunteer) set out at dawn, when the air was still cold. After all, he was about to take part in a big conference he’d never been to before — as a volunteer, no less. Everyone was meeting for the first time at the venue by 8:30 a.m. But what now? He’d shown up way too early.
It wasn’t even 8 yet, but the venue was already bustling with people. Most of them were people in blue T-shirts rushing around. Jabong, a capital-I introvert, spent a whole year’s worth of social energy to say hello to the people in blue T-shirts.
“Hi… I’m a volunteer.”
Why on Earth? Paying to Volunteer?
Sitting in a slightly chaotic office, Jabong ate Subway for breakfast. Out of nowhere, he remembered a conversation with a friend.
“Wait, you’re paying 80,000 won just to volunteer? Why?”
Honestly, sitting there awkwardly and forcing down a breakfast that stuck in his throat, all Jabong could think was:
“Ugh… why did I sign up for this?”
But Jabong was curious. Before coming to PyCon, he’d been curious about the people he’d met at a Python seminar back in July.
Python Korea User Group
At the seminar held in Gangnam in July, the future Jabong — a capital-I introvert, of course — sat there awkwardly. Even during the networking break between sessions, he just stared at his phone. But during that short break, someone I didn’t really know kept going on and on~
“‘Zen of Python’ — you can only get it here! 25,000 won… supports the Python community…”
Well, I do love Python, so I bought one as if under a spell. Then, after the sessions, dreading the real networking time, I hurriedly packed up to sneak out. While I was waiting for the elevator, he came all the way out to bow and see me off. That’s when I started to wonder.
“Why do those people go that far?”
Every one of those people was here, wearing a blue T-shirt. They were the ‘PyCon Organizing Committee’ — “Pajunwi” for short in Korean. They spend a whole year preparing PyCon, then host and run the conference.
So, How Was It?
“A bit rough? But hey, it’s fine.”
Honestly, some things were a little sloppy, and there were plenty of rough edges. I could fully understand the attendees’ complaints. If I’d been an attendee, I might have been annoyed too. Still, I remember everyone saying, “It’s okay. We understand.” Thank you so much.
I sort of got why the people preparing PyCon — which isn’t even their day job — work so hard to prepare and run it for an entire year. It was tough, but it was a far better experience than I expected, and I met great people. A special thank-you to the other volunteers who toughed it out with me!

> My fellow volunteers, who all worked so hard together!
Wrapping Up
“PyCon is an event run entirely by people who receive no financial gain, purely to broaden the reach of the open-source programming language Python and to energize its community.”
PyCon 2024 was great because it brought together such a wide variety of people. Because I took part as a volunteer, I felt firsthand how different it is from other developer events. It was a truly great experience. If you’ve read this far, I strongly recommend joining next year as a PyCon 2025 volunteer.

> I'm glad I volunteered.
Finally, this PyCon 2024 volunteer will be back next year, at the very least as a PyCon 2025 volunteer! See you!
Afterword
2025-02-08
In the end, the PyCon 2024 volunteer… applied to join the 2025 PyCon Organizing Committee! 😊
I’m an ordinary developer. That’s why I hope I can keep developing in Python for years to come. I realized I need to do what I can, for my own sake. I’m going to start various activities to help broaden Python’s reach.
Thank you!
