Google Cloud Study Jams: tips and review
Microsoft Ignite 2024 - After Party with MVP

What? They’re Giving Out Backpacks?
One day, while I was waiting for the Microsoft Ignite 2024 - After Party with MVP seminar I’d signed up for, Microsoft MVP Jaeseok Lee emailed me about a study group he was recruiting for — a study group to study “Google Study Jams.”
“A study…? A study group that studies a study…?”
I had no idea what it was, but I signed up right away and paid the 30,000 won study group fee. Why? Because I saw that you get a backpack for doing the study!

Study Jams?
Get hands-on with Cloud Study Jams
Study Jams is a free, hands-on training program offered by Google Cloud. For developers who want to learn cloud technology, it provides the chance to practice directly in a real GCP environment through the Qwiklabs platform.
- Practice with about $300 worth of free credits provided by Google
- A wide range of hands-on courses for free (Kubernetes, BigQuery, Cloud Functions, AI, and more)
- Digital badges and certificates when you complete the labs
- Bonus Google Cloud goodies as extra rewards (T-shirts, stickers, etc.)
Signing Up
You can check the Study Jams schedule on the official site. It’s also a good idea to join the Facebook group ahead of time. Once the recruitment period opens, you can join by filling out the ‘Study Jams application form’. The recruitment period is fixed, so be sure to check it and apply early.
2025 Google Study Jams: Q1
Study Jams period : 3/7 (Fri) - 6/8 (Sun)
Application period : 2/21 (Fri) - 5/29 (Thu)
Self-paced program, so you can apply any time during the period
Welcome email : March 7 (Fri), 1 p.m.
For later applicants, sent every Friday at 1 p.m.
Additional credits notice : planned for late April - early May
Completion email : June 9 (Mon), 1 p.m.
Completion form deadline : June 15 (Sun)
> Be sure to check when Study Jams starts!
Also, register as early as you can. When too many people sign up, there are sometimes problems getting the credits you need for the labs.
First Thing to Do: Register Your Credits
When Study Jams starts, the very first thing to do is read the guide carefully and register your credits! Why? Because you need credits to do the labs. You have to get these credits before you can move on with the rest of the program.
> Registering your credits matters most!
Courses
You can study a variety of courses, step by step, from beginner to advanced. Study Jams designates specific courses, so to get the completion goodies you must finish those designated courses.
It runs for about a month, and you can study on your own whenever and as much as you like. Learning mainly happens in the following three ways.
- Video lectures alongside → better understanding
- Quizzes along the way to check what you’ve learned
- Labs based on real business scenarios
Tips
Facebook Group
- Be sure to join the ‘Google Cloud Platform Korea’ group on Facebook.
- Get the latest news, and get help if you run into trouble.
Credits
- If you already have a GCP account, I recommend starting with a new one
- Be sure to activate your credits before starting the labs
- Leftover credits can be used to review courses or take other courses
- Credits expire after 6 months
Other Tips
- You can retake quizzes even if you get them wrong
- For labs, you may need to wait a moment after finishing and then check again
- It’s fine to play videos at 2x speed
- You can register your completion badges on credly.com
- I recommend following the guide documents in English → for translation, I highly recommend the Trancy Chrome extension
Wrapping Up
I started for the goodies, but by following well-structured courses, I got to learn through hands-on practice in a real service environment. It was a golden opportunity to study GCP for free. If you want to learn GCP, you should absolutely join! And take the goodies home as a bonus!
> Backpack! You're mine!
Afterword

Microsoft MVP Jaeseok Lee, who ran the study with us, also led an Azure OpenAI vs. google gemini hands-on session at the Microsoft office, so I got to try Azure too. On top of that, I heard so many great stories at the study group dinner afterward. Thank you so much!
